Embarrassed American Apparel Agrees To Meet With Nancy Upton, Plus-Size Model Contest Winner

Nancy Upton plus size American Apparel photos

Earlier this week, we enjoyed a delightful "open letter" from Iris Alonzo, creative director of American Apparel, to Nancy Upton, the Dallas woman who won the company's plus-size model contest by spoofing the nature of the contest. Iris Alonzo was not amused that the lovely Nancy Upton bested the competition with her hilarious pics in which she posed laying in a bathtub of ranch dressing and indulgently squeezing chocolate syrup in her mouth. Iris Alonzo was also not amused about the piece Nancy Upton wrote for The Daily Beast entitled "My Big Fat Photo Spoof," which explained her actions: because American Apparel was "co-opting the mantra of plus-size empowerment and glazing it with its unmistakable brand of female objectification." Why, the company was so hopping mad it told Nancy Upton they would be giving the prize to someone else. "While you were clearly the popular choice," she wrote, "we have decided to award the prizes to other contestants that we feel truly exemplify the idea of beauty inside and out, and whom we will be proud to have representing our company." Harsh.

We posted Iris Alonzo's open letter (sent to us via email) on Wednesday and urged readers to write. I have no idea of knowing how many of you did write her, but one Frisky reader got in touch to say she heard back from American Apparel's creative director. We've got their email exchange after the jump!

'America's Got Talent' Selects a Winner!

'America's Got Talent' Selects a Winner!

Who did viewers crown as the season 6 winner of America's Got Talent? During Wednesday night's finale, host Nick Cannon announced that America had awarded the $1 million prize to the classics crooning, baritone singer Landau Eugene Murphy Jr.

"Thank you so much for just believing in me and letting me be myself on national television in front of the whole world," said the mild-mannered native of West Virginia, who used to make ends meet by washing cars at an auto dealership. "This is incredible. It's been a long, hard journey. I've been busting my butt out here for this for so long, and it's finally paying off, man!"

That payoff also includes a headlining gig in Las Vegas, which fits perfectly with his Rat Pack-era sensibilities. During one memorable performance, he'd sung Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon.

As usual, the majority of the America's Got Talent's finale was devoted to celebratory performances by the final four acts. So even before his name was announced, Landau, 37, already appeared to be on Cloud 9, because he got to sing a duet with Patti LaBelle.

Even though the remaining contestants didn't take home the grand prize, they still had a memorable evening. The interpretative dance group Silhouettes, which ended the evening as the runner-up, performed with LeAnn Rimes. Third place winners Team iLuminate performed with Cobra Starship, and the California teen band, Pop Lyfe, sang with Stevie Wonder.

Were the judges happy with America's vote? They certainly were! All three of them praised Landau for winning and for excelling throughout the competition. "You could see Landau's progression through the show, it was so noticeable," said judge Sharon Osbourne after the show. "The way his performance qualities changed every week, he was a clear winner."

"America chose him, and America can't get it wrong!" said her co-judge, Howie Mandel. "He stuck right in his game. He knew what America was responding to. He is phenomenal, and he's gonna be a superstar for many years to come."

"He was the most charismatic act in the show," said Piers Morgan. "He's humble, he's likable, and he's incredibly talented."

All around, it was a happy ending. And even if you voted for one of the other three acts, take heart: They get to play Vegas, too.

Brad Pitt Is 'Inspiring,' 'World War Z' Director Says

'I always wanted to work with [Pitt],' Marc Forster tells MTV News.

Like a zombie ambling toward its target, Brad Pitt took his time developing "World War Z." Plan B, his production company, first acquired the rights to Max Brooks' novel about the rise of the flesh-eating undead in 2007, then hiring "Quantum of Solace" director Marc Forster to helm the project before the script underwent a series of rewrites.

At that point, it was not at all clear that Pitt would take on anything more than a behind-the-scenes role. Eventually, though, Forster found in Pitt not only a hands-on producer but the star of his film.

"I was really intrigued by the book," Forster told MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival while promoting his drama, "Machine Gun Preacher." "I always wanted to work with [Pitt]. I think he is an incredible actor and he is an inspiring collaborator. If you look at his filmography, he has incredibly good taste. The choices he makes — he's very smart about it."

The book itself doesn't present a straightforward narrative, but an oral history that skips from character to character and crumbling nation to crumbling nation as the zombie apocalypse takes hold. From these far-flung plot strands, the filmmakers had to construct a coherent, streamlined narrative. What's more, they had to find a way to separate "World War Z" from the zombie-centric pack, both past and present, in movies, TV, video games and beyond.

"You want to try to avoid the cliché, try to make something interesting that hasn't been done before, and I felt [Pitt] was the right collaborator for that," Forster said.

Doing something fresh, in this case, meant creating something new: The film trades an oral history approach for a focus on Pitt's globe-hopping United Nations employee. "He's someone who works in the UN, has been in a lot of the hotspots around the world, from Bosnia to Sarajevo to Somalia, and has been able to stay alive," Forster said. "In this extraordinary circumstance, his journey is to basically stay alive so that the audience can keep enjoying the movie. He is trying to get to the root of how it started and to maybe find a way to beat it."

Check out everything we've got on "World War Z."

Brad Pitt Issues an Apology Over Jennifer Aniston Parade Quote, Praises Her As "Giving, Loving, and Hilarious"

Brad Pitt released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter clarifying his quote from Parade Magazine that made headlines yesterday. According to the interview, Brad talked about "pretending" during his marriage with Jennifer Aniston, which ended in 2005. Since then, Brad, Jennifer, and Brad's current partner Angelina Jolie have been the subjects of countless love triangle stories that seem to find their way into every interview with any of the three.

The quote in question said, "I think that my marriage [to actress Jennifer Aniston] had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't." It was received with outrage from some fans who thought he was trashing his ex wife. This evening, Brad released a statement through his rep clarifying the quote. He says:

"It grieves me that this was interpreted this way. Jen is an incredibly giving, loving and hilarious woman who remains my friend. It is an important relationship I value greatly. The point I was trying to make is not that Jen was dull, but that I was becoming dull to myself -- and that, I am responsible for."
