Kathleen Hanna On Being A Feminist Ambassador

Kathleen Hanna and Le Tigre photo

"I feel like there's this weird thing that as a feminist band you get put in this role as ambassadors. Certain people are like 'Oh, here come the Feminazis!' You end up acting 10 times nicer than you even need to be, to be the opposite of the stereotype like 'You're the man haters!' We're always bending over backwards being extra nice. And I don't know if being nice is my legacy. Johanna [Fateman, my Le Tigre bandmate] and I talked about it a lot. Both of us wish that we would have broken out of the mold sometimes and just be jerks more often."

Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre on giving interviews as a feminist musician. While I'm not sure I'd ever condone being a "jerk" — the world has enough jerks! — I can also relate to feeling responsible for 'making feminism look good,' so to speak. The "feminazi" stereotype is so pervasive that lots of people don't understand what feminism actually is. Thanks a pantsful, Rush Limbaugh. But proving that we don't hate men — which is completely untrue, obviously — is a waste of our valuable time and energy. [Spinner]

CMT Awards Winners: Blake Shelton, Taylor Swift & Justin Bieber

CMT Awards Winners: Blake Shelton, Taylor Swift & Justin Bieber

Country sweetheart Taylor Swift was, once again, the big winner at Wednesday night's CMT Music Awards. But, unfortunately, the 21-year-old singer wasn't even there to enjoy her big night!

The show, which took place in Nashville and was hosted by Kid Rock, kicked off with a pre-taped segment starring Swift and Shania Twain doing their best Thelma and Louise impression. Swift, who's currently on tour, later accepted the trophy for video of the year for "Mine" via satellite.

Newlyweds Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert had more to celebrate as both were recognized for their music. Lambert won best female country video for her emotional "The House That Built Me," while her new hubby was the night's only double winner. The Voice star scored a trophy in the best male video category for "Who Are You When I'm Not Looking," and he also won for best web video for "Kiss My Country Ass."

And would it really be an awards show if Justin Bieber didn't win something? The 17-year-old superstar shared his first country trophy with Rascal Flatts, winning best collaborative video for their hit "That Should Be Me."

Performance of the year went to the Zac Brown Band and icon Jimmy Buffett for their CMT Crossroads showing of "Margaritaville."

Other winners included Lady Antebellum, Sugarland and the breakthrough video winners The Band Perry for their haunting tune "If I Die Young."

Alec Baldwin May Run for NYC Mayor -- Would You Vote for Him?

Alec Baldwin May Run for NYC Mayor -- Would You Vote for Him?

30 Rock star and staunch Democrat Alec Baldwin has long talked about running for political office -- and soon he may be putting his money where his mouth is. In the wake of Congressman Anthony Weiner's Twitter/texting/sexting scandal, speculation is rampant that Baldwin is considering running for mayor of New York City, a job now held by Michael Bloomberg. A friend of the actor tells The Daily that when the Weiner scandal broke, "Alec said, 'Hey, maybe this changes the race. The dynamics have shifted.'"

Indeed they have. Having reached his term limit, Mayor Bloomberg will not run again in 2013. And Rep. Weiner, who had always had his eye on the mayorship of New York, is now all but out of the running. Says The Daily's source: "The Democrats need a high-profile candidate, and Alec can fill that bill."

Indeed he can. The Emmy-winning Baldwin, 53, publicly supported Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential bid, has been an outspoken advocate for liberal causes, and has not been afraid to criticize national policies, in print and on Twitter. He has also made it known that when his 30 Rock contract expires next year, he wants to retire from acting, perhaps clearing the way for a political career.

As far back as 1997, Baldwin was musing about politics as an alternate career, saying in a New York magazine cover story, "Is this something that I want to do? Yes."

In an interview on Parker Spitzer in December 2010, Baldwin, who grew up in Long Island, N.Y., suggested that perhaps the wrong kind of people have been monopolizing positions of government power. "I don't want to say this in an anti-elitist way, but we've had men who are Ivy League groomed running this country since 1988," he said. "We've had 22 years of Yale and Harvard running this country right now, and the problems aren't getting solved."

So would an actor and celebrity potentially be the right kind of person to get those problems solved? Well, when asked this morning whether Baldwin might run for New York City mayor, Alec's rep told The Hollywood Reporter: "I wouldn't rule it out."

Heat Fans -- Dropping VOODOO Curse on the Mavs

Miami Heat fans are seeking some old-fashioned voodoo vengeance on the Dallas Mavericks, TMZ has learned -- buying up voodoo dolls by the HUNDREDS ... to curse the Mavs during the NBA finals.

0608_nba_voodoo_finals_ex
They're selling out like hot cakes ... but the owner of El Viejo Lazaro Botanica -- which hocks all sorts of bizarre religious supplies, including voodoo stuff -- tells TMZ, he has no idea which Mavs are being targeted by the hexes.

If they're not buying voodoo dolls, we're told Miami fans are turning to herbal remedies -- buying what are called "Paraiso" herbs to use in a bath.

According to the owner, you put the herbs in a bath, get in, then visualize what you want to happen -- in this case, a Miami Heat victory.

Lucky for the Heat, they probably won't need the extra help.
