Lady Gaga Wanted 'Born This Way' To Be 'A Viral Message'

'BTW' video creative director Laurieann Gibson says Gaga recruited director Nick Knight to push the envelope.

If it wasn't clear from watching Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" video, the singer intended for the over-the-top clip to be a visual spectacle. And that's why she wanted fashion photographer Nick Knight onboard to direct.

"Well, that was completely from the gate. She was like, 'I want Nick Knight for this video, I want a visual,' " the video's creative director, Laurieann Gibson, explained to MTV News. "She was always birthing something visual in her head. [Knight's] prolific, but he's so genius visually. He's such an Englishman. He's so particular and everything must be spot-on. [The video] was about a beautiful photograph and it was about pushing the bar; it is a viral message. Nick was flawless."

Many of the visuals in the video are tied to the dance, which Gibson choreographed for the splashy sci-fi-style video.

"At first, when I thought about birthing a new race and adding the prosthetics, I thought that maybe they should have a certain way they should walk or maybe they move a certain way, but then I realized it is actually a race within our race; it's a mindset," Gibson recalled. "So they don't have to walk funny," she said of the figures in the video.

Instead, Gibson focused on how she to interpret the song's feel-good message in the moves. "So I just told the story of the record," she said. "We birth ourselves out of the womb. There's lots of pushing and birthing [in the video]. There's lots of punching through the adversity, and then we go to church. So it's very symbolic, it's really based in modern dance: She's doing [Martha] Graham. She's doing [Lester] Horton. These are legitimate dance techniques."

Holly Madison Talks Weight Gain; Poses in Unretouched Bikini Photos

Well, this is refreshing! Though Holly Madison has admitted that she was recently criticized by her Peepshow director, for gaining 15 pounds following her move to Las Vegas, the former playmate refuses to feel ashamed of her body

"I'd rather be overweight and curvy than super thin with no curves," Madison, 32, told Life & Style at a photo shoot on Feb 21. "I'm proud of my body."

So proud, in fact, that Madison allowed the mag to print unretouched bikini photos of her -- something that ladies of Hollywood almost never do.

"I have cellulite -- and had it even when I was at my absolute thinnest," she admits. "I'm never not going to have cellulite. People need to just accept that it's there and maybe dress accordingly or use body makeup to cope with it."

The Holly's World star does admit that she was initially hurt by the criticisms of her fuller figure. "Once I realized that other people were noticing that I'd packed on a few, I was embarrassed to go onstage," she revealed. "After moving to Vegas, I lived in a suite in Planet Hollywood for a year and ordered room service all the time. I like food too much to go on some crazy diet. French fries are my favorite downfall."

But Madison says she's not about to get all crazy about the extra weight, and does her best to stay healthy with Pilates classes, 20-minute runs, and by mixing prepared meals from the Fresh Diet delivery service into her lifestyle.

"I've always had a butt, and I want to keep it -- cellulite and all," she says. "I'm not perfect, but I love my curves."

Lady Gaga Makes Runway Debut At Mugler Fashion Show

Before Wednesday's (March 2) Mugler fashion show in Paris even kicked off, fans were treated to some behind-the-scenes action as models and stylists scrambled to finalize the looks for Nicola Formichetti's debut women's-wear collection for the line. Perhaps the most famous model backstage? That would be Lady Gaga.

Mugler was the perfect line for Gaga's catwalk debut — not just because creative director Formichetti is her stylist, but also because its gothy, latexy and glamorous aesthetic perfectly fits Gaga's over-the-top style.

When the show did eventually kick off, Paris' most fashionable, including Vogue editor Anna Wintour, filled the seats to see what Formichetti had up his sleeve. This season, the brand showed models styled with sleek ponytails and variations on the cat eye. The clothes had lots of leather, sheer fabrics and plastic-like garments that were equally futuristic and sophisticated, fitting perfectly to the model's bodies. Shoulders were an emphasis of the ensembles, while pencil skirts and wide-legged pants also ruled. Blacks, Army greens and dark neutrals flooded the line, which also included wintery whites, leopard prints and cobalt blues.

Gaga hit the stage early in the show in her Mugler finest. For her initial appearance, she wore a version of a beret, two flowing pigtails, a dazzling diamond necklace, a sheer black top with a bra, a leather skirt and towering boots. Gaga posed and smoked a cigarette onstage as models, including Zombie Boy, tried to act like the superstar wasn't onstage with them. As she walked off, cheers could be heard from the audience.

Gaga re-emerged for the close of the show in a flowing, white skirt with white bustier and super-high platforms. She completed the look with a white hat and sheer scarf. (Always self-aware, Gaga was heard telling handlers backstage before she hit the runway, "If I vomit on the stage, it would be good press." She also was spotted practicing her fiercest strut.)

As "Born This Way" played out, the models took their final walks. Gaga hugged Formichetti as the designer came out for his bow. Backstage, as the live-stream cameras still rolled, Gaga took photos and got flowers.

In addition to playing "BTW" and "Scheiße," Gaga debuted "Government Hooker," a trance-y dance track about all things sexy in which she recites lines like "Put your hands on me."
